Collector knowledge

The EdgeFinds TCG guide.

Whether you're buying your first booster box or your hundredth single, here's how we think about collecting well.

Buying singles

  • Singles let you buy exactly the card you want without the gamble of opening packs.
  • Read the condition description carefully — Near Mint, Lightly Played, and beyond matter for both play and value.
  • For high-value cards, clear photos and honest grading notes are worth more than a cheap price.

Sealed product

  • Booster boxes and elite trainer boxes suit collectors who enjoy the rip — or holding sealed for the long term.
  • Sealed product should arrive unopened and untampered; we pack boxes to protect corners and seals.
  • Pre-orders secure stock before release day, when popular sets can sell out fast.

Japanese releases

  • Japanese sets often feature different artwork, print quality prized by collectors, and earlier release dates.
  • Pull rates and card numbering differ from English sets — always check the set list before buying.
  • Japanese product makes a great display piece and an affordable way to chase premium-looking cards.

Protecting your cards

  • Penny sleeve every card worth keeping — it takes seconds and prevents surface wear.
  • Toploaders and one-touch magnetic cases protect valuable singles in storage and transit.
  • Keep sealed product away from heat, sunlight, and humidity to preserve condition and value.

Understanding condition

  • Near Mint (NM): a clean card with minimal to no visible wear.
  • Lightly Played (LP): minor edge or surface wear visible on close inspection.
  • Moderately/Heavily Played (MP/HP): noticeable wear — great for players, priced accordingly.

Collecting with purpose

  • Decide your focus: a master set, a favourite Pokémon, sealed holdings, or playable decks.
  • Track what you own so you don't double up — and so you know when a chase is complete.
  • Buy what you love first; value trends come and go, but a collection you enjoy always wins.
